Strike in Milan

On Thursday, May 13th, Daniel Barenboim was to have conducted the premiere of Das Rheingold at the Teatro alla Scala. Over the past few weeks, however, tension between the musicians' and stage hands' unions and the Italian government have escalated despite the government's proposed revision of a decree that would deprive many theaters of the necessary funds to continue to operate as they currently do. In a display of solidarity with other affected Italian theaters, the Teatro alla Scala has decided to strike on May 13th, thereby deferring the premiere of Rheingold to May 16th. Meanwhile, the Filarmonica della Scala will perform as planned with Daniel Barenboim and violin soloist Guy Braunstein, concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic, on May 14th. The program begins with Brahms' Violin Concerto and is followed by four of Ravel's Spanish-influenced orchestral works, the Rhapsodie Espagnole, Pavane pour une Infante Défunte, Alborada del Gracioso, and Bolero.
