Schumann for Breakfast; Schubert, Beethoven, and Rands for Dinner

The Daniel Barenboim Matinee cycle at the German State Opera continues this Sunday, March 14th, with an homage to Robert Schumann on his 200th birthday. Barenboim will perform the Fantasiestücke for Clarinet and Piano, the Three Romances for Oboe and Piano, the Adagio and Allegro for Horn and Piano, the rarely performed Andante and Variations op. 46 for two pianos, two violoncelli, and horn, and the Piano Quintet. In addition to his guest Lang Lang, Barenboim will be joined by Staatskapelle Berlin members Gregor Witt, Heiner Schindler, Hans-Jürgen Krumstroh, Wolf-Dieter Batzdorf, Axel Wilczok, Julia Deyneka, Sennu Laine, and So Jung Lee.

Later on the same day, Barenboim and Lang Lang will adjoin to the Philharmonie to give the sixth subscription concert of the Staatskapelle's season. The program begins with Schubert's Gesang der Geister über den Wässern, and proceeds with Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, performed by Lang Lang. The concert concludes with a contemporary work by Bernard Rands, an English composer living in the United States. apokryphos was premiered in Chicago in 2003. The program will be repeated the following day in the Konzerthaus Berlin on March 15th.
