Open Rehearsals in Milan

The Italian government's proposed opera budget cuts, which will have detrimental effects on the entire country's cultural life, has prompted musicians, stage hands, and other theater employees of Italy's fourteen subsidized opera houses and symphony orchestras to strike in protest. While they take to the streets, Daniel Barenboim has announced his own decision to open two rehearsals for Wagner's Das Rheingold at the Teatro alla Scala to the public for free. The opera, directed by Guy Cassiers, is scheduled to premiere on May 13th if an agreement is reached by then between the unions and the Italian government's cultural minister.
