Contemporary Music with Young People

On Sunday, June 14th, the Barenboim cycle at the German State Opera continued with a program of Carter and Berg. Several young musicians from the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin performed some of Elliott Carter’s Figments, (his series of solo pieces for diverse instruments), and Barenboim led an ensemble of young people from the Academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin in Carter’s Mosaics. The second half of the program consisted solely of Alban Berg’s formidable work, the Kammerkonzert for Piano and Violin with 13 Winds. Barenboim’s son Michael was the violin soloist, and Jordanian Divan member Karim Said was the piano soloist. On the evening of the same day, the group performed the Berg once again in addition to Schubert’s Trout Quintet in the Philharmonie Essen.
