Chopin turns 200 years old next year

In preparation for the Chopin year 2010, Barenboim begins a Chopin cycle this week that will recur throughout the season. On Monday, September 21st, he performs both Chopin piano concerti with the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Lawrence Foster in Lisbon. He will also perform both concerti with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, also under the direction of Lawrence Foster, in Paris with the Orchestre de Paris and Christoph Eschenbach, and in Berlin with Asher Fisch and the Berlin Philharmonic. In both Lisbon and Monte Carlo, Barenboim will follow the symphonic concerts with all-Chopin recitals. Further recitals will take place in Copenhagen and Berlin in mid-October. The recital programs include some of the composer's most important works, such as the Sonata no. 2 in B Minor (Funeral March), the Barcarole, the Fantasy in F Minor, and the Sonata no. 3 in B Minor, op. 58.
