Carter and Richard Strauss in the Philharmonie Berlin

On June 11th, 12th, and 13th, Barenboim led the Berlin Philharmonic in a program of Strauss’ tone poems—Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks—and Elliott Carter concerti, which included Emmanuel Pahud’s European premiere of the Carter Flute Concerto. The piece was jointly commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Carter’s Dialogues for piano and orchestra was also performed by Nicolas Hodges, who played the world premiere of the piece in 2004.
