Barenboim to lead European premiere of Carter's A Sunbeam's Architecture with Staatskapelle Berlin, Rolando Villazón

Next week Daniel Barenboim leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in the European premiere of Elliott Carter's A Sunbeam's Architecture at Berlin's Konzerthaus (April 8) and Konzerthaus (April 9) with guest soloist Rolando Villazón. The late American composer's song cycle for tenor and orchestra draws its texts from poems by E.E. Cummings and was "made to show the poet in a period when the telephone was still a novelty and the First World War (1914-1919) still raging." Elliott Carter was a friend and colleague of Barenboim, and you can read Maestro's remembrance here.

Barenboim's program with the Staatskapelle Berlin pairs Carter's music with that of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The two performances will feature Carter's Concertino for Bass Clarinet, performances of Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, Symphony No. 35, and select concert arias performed by Rolando Villazón.
