Barenboim opens Berlin Staatsoper season with “Barbiere,” his first Rossini opera
On October 4 Daniel Barenboim opens the Berlin Staatsoper’s 2011-12 season, his 19th as Music Director, conducting the first Rossini opera of his career: Il Barbiere di Siviglia. The gala evening at the Schiller Theater, the temporary home of the Staatsoper while the company’s home on the Unter den Linden is being renovated, will be followed by encore performances on October 8, 10 and 16. The cast for this revival production by acclaimed director Achim Freyer is headlined by tenor Dmitry Korchak as Count Almaviva, mezzo-soprano Rachel Frenkel as Rosina, and baritone Christopher Maltman as Figaro. On October 2 the Staatsoper presents a special discounted preview performance to people under the age of 35.
