50th Anniversary Concert
 |
On the afternoon of August 19th 1950, a young boy in
short trousers climbed the steps to the stage of the Sala Beyer in
Buenos Aires to make his piano debut. The audience, astounded by the
accomplishments of the seven year-old child, demanded first one encore
and then another. After seven encores, the youngster came to
the front of the stage with an apology: he would love to play more
for them, he said, but the long program and seven encores had exhausted
his entire repertoire. |
|
Fifty years to the day after his auspicious debut, Daniel Barenboim
returned "to the scene of the crime" to give a recital
at Buenos Aires' Teatro Colon performing Mozart Sonata in C major,
KV 330, Beethoven Appassionata Sonata and Albéniz Iberia Books 1
and 2.
|
| When he left the city with his parents to move to Israel
in 1952, Daniel Barenboim was a local phenomenon. He returned for
his 50th anniversary recital as an international musical personality,
a citizen of the world and "one of the few musicians in the
world today who could accurately be described as legendary."

Daniel Barenboim's recital in Buenos Aires was ecstatically received
by the 3000 strong audience who sang "Happy Anniversary"
in unison to him as he returned to the stage and then proceeded
to call out their encore requests. 18 encores later Daniel Barenboim
came to the front of the stage with an apology: he would love to
play more for them, he said, but the theater had to prepare the
set for an opera rehearsal the following morning and begged him
to stop at midnight! With worldwide media coverage, this recital
will go down in history as one of the musical events of the 21st
Century.
